Riverside Reviews

The Riverside is listed in major guide books, usually under Bridport. All Guide books vary with their criteria for judgment, some concentrate on outward signs of quality such as glassware, cutlery and furnishings, others are more mindful of the sort of experience that their readers are looking for...

"An extensive, interesting and varied menu ..the fish was superb..."

What a find! ...it was so good we went back for a second visit. A family-owned restaurant providing a friendly, informal ambience in a light and airy setting overlooking the river. Service was fast, efficient and friendly. An extensive, interesting and varied menu. Not only was the fish superb (and our meat eater had a great steak), and the portions good, but the desserts were excellent (from the Riverside's own pastry chef). Not cheap, but excellent value for money. We had two really enjoyable evenings at the Riverside and look forward to returning.

"...Top 50 Places to eat by the Sea"

The Riverside has appeared in the Top 50 Places to eat by the Sea feature by Caroline Boucher in The Times Saturday April 17th. chosen by chefs and foodies including Oliver Peyton, Tom Parker Bowles, Mark Hix, Rick Stein, Fergus Henderson, Mourad Mazouz and Skye Gyngell.  "Nobu could take a leaf out of this establishment's book; the management is so keenly aware of diminishing fish stocks that there is a sustainability log at reception.

Situated slap bang on the Jurassic coast the Riverside has a fabulous menu and claims to source 90% of its food locally.  Try the grilled black bream with wild mushoom and pea risotto, or perhaps the West Bay crab linguine.

"...excellent fresh seafood bought from local fishermen"

A great advert for local food ... grilled mackerel fillets with salsa verde, crab linguine, Lyme Bay lobster with parsley butter, baked turbot with mild mustard and lemon sauce, whole roast sea bream with sea salt and thyme.

Langoustines
“My wife would have happily died after her langoustines!"

This "stunningly-located" seaside café, "on a little island in the river", has long been "one of the best-known restaurants on the south coast", and with good reason – "fish doesn’t come any better" than the "huge range" on offer here. Hardens Restaurant Guide 2009

"An unpretentious
fish restaurant"

Set on the Dorset coast. It offers fine dining in friendly surroundings, with views of the River Brit, beautiful countryside and the sea.
Sunday Telegraph April 2009:

"Perfect for Purists… Also private parties"

...the south coast’s finest fish restaurant, on account of the sheer quality of its supplies and the simple verve with which they are prepared.  It’s weird to think that in the 1960’s when it opened, there was little demand for local seafood.  Now it’s overrun with devotees who enjoy the no-frills blue and white décor and bare-board informality.
Sophie Dening, Restaurants Editor, Harpers Bazaar Top 250 UK Restaurants 2008

"Perfectly timed and seasoned"

"Plaice fillets served with chive beurre blanc were unusually thick for a flat fish and had concomitant depth of flavour. Grilled fillet of brill with sorrel sauce and crispy spinach delighted someone new to brill. The Lyme Bay Dover sole was sensational, perfectly timed and seasoned, and so hot it must have been rushed from the kitchen".

"Fresh seafoods in a stunning location"

"Overlooking the river and harbour. Long-established seafood restaurant specialising in fresh local produce. Relaxed, informal, friendly, great wine list, great location! Advance reservation advised".

"South West’s best coastal restaurant"

“Always full, and no wonder, exquisite fresh fish, with a hint of France, helps make this simple and unpretentious operation – now coming up to its 40th year – the South West’s best coastal restaurant, for some reporters".
Hardens Restaurant guide (available online at Waitrose.com)

"One of the finest fish restaurants in the South West"
Says Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall and his son.
The Observer

"...the best ingredients are cooked with the best technique, the outcome is the best dish".
